The Sunnat Struggle
The Crisis of Sanitation for Muslim Girls in Bijapur

Cause Introduction

In Islam, hygiene and the Sunnah are closely interconnected. Observing proper hygiene is considered a part of the Sunnah emphasized the importance of cleanliness in both physical and spiritual aspects of life.

In Bijapur, a drought-prone region of Karnataka, the well-being and education of Muslim minority girls are severely impacted by the absence of adequate sanitation facilities in schools. This issue, rooted in religious observance and exacerbated by socio-economic factors, presents a significant barrier to their health and prospects. Adherence to Sunnat, including hygiene rituals, emphasizes the critical need to address sanitation requirements for these girls.

Girls often refrain from urinating during long school hours due to the unavailability of sanitation facilities, resulting in discomfort and health risks such as UTIs, urological complications, chronic kidney diseases, and even cervical cancer. These health challenges underscore the urgent need to address this issue to prevent a cycle of illness and compromised well-being among young Muslim girls.

Our Action

The Ladli Foundation, in partnership with local communities and schools, is spearheading initiatives to build safe and sustainable toilets tailored to the needs of Muslim girls. These cutting-edge facilities not only cater to immediate sanitation requirements but also empower girls to prioritize their health and well-being, thereby facilitating their continued education and boosting school attendance. Furthermore, menstrual health programs are being introduced to dismantle the stigma surrounding menstruation and equip girls with the necessary resources for proper hygiene management.

Long-Term Impact:

By providing accessible sanitation facilities and promoting menstrual health awareness, the campaign aims to achieve several long-term benefits:

  1. Improved Health: Access to proper sanitation reduces the risk of illnesses and promotes overall well-being among Muslim girls in Bijapur.
  2. Enhanced Education: With the elimination of health-related barriers, girls are more likely to attend school regularly, leading to improved academic performance and educational outcomes.
  3. Empowerment: By prioritizing girls' health and education, the campaign fosters a sense of empowerment, enabling them to break free from socio-economic constraints and pursue their aspirations.
  4. Societal Transformation: The integration of sustainable sanitation solutions fosters a culture of health and hygiene within communities, contributing to broader societal development and progress.

Conclusion:

The campaign to provide toilets for Muslim girls in Bijapur represents a crucial step towards addressing the intersection of health, sanitation, and education. Through collaborative efforts and sustainable interventions, we aspire to create a future where every girl has the opportunity to lead a healthy, prosperous life. Together, let us empower Muslim girls in Bijapur to thrive and fulfil their potential.
