Cause

The birth of a male child is a matter of great elation and festivity in any family. But it's mourned in the highest decibels of despair. Suppose a girl is born in an underprivileged family. In that case, her birth is considered to bring along with it the lifelong baggage of dowry. In most disadvantaged families, starting from the birth of a girl child, efforts are made to save money for her marriage, not for her education and extra-curricular activities. 

In India, Marriage is an expensive affair or a ritual that most underprivileged families are bound to perform under societal pressure. Also, destitution is so deeply rooted that getting their daughters married at an early age provides them social security. Unfortunately, this is a big reason for young girls' child marriages, trafficking, and forced prostitution.  

Child Marriages are a global concern and have severe implications on the development of adolescent girls and young women. Significantly in lower strata, Gender-Based Violence and discrimination put them at high risk of malnutrition, anemia, and deadly transferable diseases, including HIV/AIDS & other STDs. Which is the leading cause of death for women of reproductive age worldwide.

The founder of Ladli Foundation was born in a slum and has struggled with dowry culture for his sister's marriage and witnessed the lives of people living in the slum from the most proximate realm. Which made him motivated to work for this cause. 

Our Action

Ladli believes that the most vulnerable and victimized prey in India today is an "Uneducated Unmarried Girl." The Shagun initiative primarily focuses on providing Health, Education & Skills Development for adolescents and young women. Secondly, it involves the masses in helping underprivileged families with their daughter's education, health, and marriages by catering to their traditional beliefs & rituals of Navratra Kanya-Pujan and Mass Marriages. 
We believe that supporting the underprivileged famlies for their daughter's wedding through systematic Mass Marriages will encourage them to provide her education & well-being. It will also help against her child marriage.  

Following Activities will be carried out under the initiative- 

• Organizing mass wedding events by involving community leaders and Govt. Administration by verifying the criminal background of the groom for his involvement with organized sex rackets or trafficking groups. 
• Providing her 3 Years Health Insurance & Organising their Marriage Aniversary to give her social support and  motivate against female foeticide 
• Connecting privileged families with underprivileged to take the responsibility of their daughter's education and health through social adoption by organizing Navratra Kanya-Pujan events.
• Distributing education & Personal Hygiene Kits for adolescent girls in slums. 

Impact 

Previous Activities and its Outcome:- 

• Successfully executed mass marriages for 1753 women. 
• Based on an official police certificate, when these beneficiaries were later checked, not even a single became the victim of dowry-related domestic violence.
• The girls who got married have given birth to girls, and not a single case of female infanticide has been reported. 
• The most significant task was to change the mindset of the people that a daughter is not a burden.

Being linked with the UN SDGs also restrains the below issues:-

• Establish the concern faced by underprivileged girls and provide education, healthcare, and well-being by catering to traditional beliefs
• Elimination of Child Marriages & Trafficking
• Saving Girls and women from victimization by family and patriarchal society. 
• Stop exploitation and atrocities against females & female infanticide. 
• Girls from this marginalized household are being sent to school.
