Pathanshala

Support for Providing education for street children, ragpickers & child beggars at Red-Light Crossings & Slums.

Cause

The Initiatives aims to provide "Education To All & Eliminating Child Abuse." Especially for the most vulnerable in the marginalized society, such as child beggars, child laborers, and school dropout children in slums and rural parts of India, Ladli Foundation Trust has launched an initiative, "Pathanshala."

India has an estimated 46 million children between 6 and 18 years of age who should be in school but work as child beggars or child labor. Many of them become the victim of child sexual abuse. Lakhs of children do not go to schools despite having free access to government schools. Therefore, it is imperative to motivate those children and their parents by understanding the importance of education.

A lot of children, especially girls, are being forced to get married or sold off. Nearly 23 million girls drop out of school every year when they start menstruating in India. As per the UNESCO report, 264 million slum children do not have access to education.

Education plays an essential role in shaping the overall development of an individual and society. Schools are the best place where millions of children gain knowledge and learn the basic fundamentals to live a quality life.

Action

Inspired by the words of Swami Vivekanand, "IF THE POOR CANNOT COME TO EDUCATION, EDUCATION MUST GO TO HIM," the concept of Pathanshaala is designed to provide basic education through mobile classes at slums and redlight crossings.

This initiative involves and engages with children through various fun activities and reward-based competitions to develop an interest in studies to continue their further education. We also
sensitize the parents on the prevalence of child sexual abuse and motivate them to educate their children.
The main focus will be on the following points:

  • Identify and attract children by giving them gifts and snacks
  • Training on Good Touch – Bad Touch, Child abuse, WASH etc.
  • Provide them primary education.
  • Orientation them to divert themselves from substance abuse & crimes
  • Teach them about basic morals & ethics
  • Increase their interest in education with the enjoying ways
  • Help them in developing good combination skills
  • Make them aware of issues and crimes against children and women
  • Getting their admission in a nearby government school.

Impact

  • Knowledge and learning about the basic fundamentals to live a quality life.
  • Sesntisation about good touch – bad touch at the initial stage in life will reduce child and sexual abuse.
  • Strengthen the government's literacy mission "Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan" & Right to Education
  • Creating a safe space for children to open up.
  • Prevention from substance abuse and juvenile crimes.
  • Guidance and nourishments to save them from malnutrition.
  • Overall development of an individual to make them productive and an asset for the society and nation-building.

Pathanshala being one of its kind, is an attempt to tackle the decline in quality education and  growing issues around the children and help them with channelizing their energy and develop into better citizens.
